(AMM) Aleris idling Mich. specialty alloy plant (UPDATE)

Aleris International Inc. has set a one-month shutdown-possibly longer-for most of its specialty alloy production capacity in Coldwater, Mich., resulting in the temporary layoff of 100 workers.
The operation could resume in February, but that will depend on market conditions, Aleris told suppliers. Some got the impression that a three-month suspension is more likely.
One market participant said the aluminum alloy market is too soft for Aleris' move to have much impact on prices for either ingot or scrap. By that assessment, Aleris will be saving on expenses but won't be altering how much ingot it produces or how much scrap it consumes.
