(AMM) Steel slowdown delays new Horsehead EF recycling plant

Zinc recycler Horsehead Corp. is delaying the start-up of its new 160,000-tonne facility in South Carolina due to the ongoing low capacity utilization by the domestic steelmaking industry.

The new plant?which will process zinc-containing electric-arc furnace (EF) dust?was first announced in December 2007 at a time when more EF dust was being produced than recyclers could process. But as a growing number of U.S. steelmakers have idled production, increased recycling capacity for steelmaking by-products is no longer a pressing issue, the company said, meaning the immediate addition of new recycling capacity can wait.
