July 02, 2009 - 19:52 GMT Location: LOS ANGELES

West Coast flat-rolled producers are looking to build on a pricing recovery as they slate increases of $40 per ton or higher.

California Steel Industries Inc. (CSI), Fontana, Calif., has notified customers it will boost prices in August by a minimum of $40 per ton for hot-rolled sheet and at least $50 per ton for cold-rolled and galvanized.

The West's other major producer, USS-Posco Industries (UPI), Pittsburg, Calif., has told the market it will boost prices by at least $70 per ton on cold-rolled and galvanized in September.

"As best we can tell, these increases are sticking?no problem," said a service center executive.

"There's really no negotiation out there, either by us with the mills or our customers with us,"...
