(AMM) Quallion awaiting federal funds for lithium-ion plant

Quallion LLC, the center of a controversy over budget earmarks last winter, said it plans to move ahead with plans to build a $220-million state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery plant in Palmdale, Calif., if the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) approves its application for federal funding.

Based in Sylmar, Calif., Quallion is one of more than 100 battery companies competing for $2 billion in funding for a variety of new-generation battery manufacturing proposals in at least eight different states. It's expected that as much as $1.2 billion of that funding will be funneled to seven or eight of the largest battery manufacturing companies. Quallion is believed to be among them, sources said.
