Shanghai copper pares early gains, ends up 0.4%

Copper on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) rose 0.4% ($32) on Thursday, after bigger gains earlier in the day were wiped out by nervousness on China's stock markets.

The February contract ended at 54,900 yuan per tonne, up 0.4% from Wednesday’s close, as trading volume fell 16,656 lots to 153,504 lots. “Shanghai copper hit a high of 55,500 yuan in the morning when LME copper broke through $7,000 for the second time this week,” said a trader in Shanghai.
