(AMM) Technology for WM landfill venture may be fit for fluff

March 09, 2010 - 20:21 GMT Location: New York

KEYWORDS: Waste Management , landfill , Oregon

A joint venture at a Waste Management Inc. landfill in Oregon will convert garbage into fuel and energy using a technology that a similar Japanese plant feeds partly with auto shredder fluff.

Construction on the Columbia Ridge, Ore., landfill is due to begin in early summer, with startup slated by year-end. The project is expected to create up to 28 jobs during the construction phase, with up to 16 permanent "green" jobs when the facility is operational.

The process, called plasma gasification, heats materials to 15,000 degrees Fahrenheit, surrounded by a fluid that conducts electricity.
