(AMM) Ravenswood smelter restart inches closer with W.Va. bill

Century Aluminum Co.'s shuttered smelter in Ravenswood, W.Va., could be just a signature away from a restart.

The 170,000-tonne-per-year smelter, idled in February 2009 when aluminum prices were at the bottom of the market, moved one step closer to production this week when the state legislature passed a bill to authorize reduced power rates during times of low aluminum prices.

The bill, approved by both West Virginia's Senate and House of Delegates, is now awaiting a sign-off from the state's governor, Joe Manchin.
