Worldwide HBI output surpassed 10 million tonnes last year

Global production of hot-briquetted iron (HBI) surpassed the 10 million tonnes in 2009, with around 6 million tonnes being shipped, the Hot Briquetted Iron Association (HBIA) said on Friday

For the first time the compiled figures included production and shipments of all plants capable of HBI production in the world, and not only those operated by its members, HBIA told MB. India’s Essar Steel was the world’s largest producer with 4.2 million tonnes, but the company has not shipped any tonnage since its production was entirely used in its steel operations.
