(AMM) Raw material costs driving tubular price hikes

A number of tubular price increases recently have a lot to do with raw material hikes and little to do with demand, according to industry sources.

Over the course of a week, PTC Alliance Corp., Wexford, Pa., said it would increase immediately non-contract prices for new orders for electric-resistance weld (ERW) tubing by $55 per ton, and Tex-Tube Co., Houston, said it would increase immediately base prices for API line pipe and standard pipe products by $75 per ton (AMM, April 1).

Prior to that, Allied Tube & Conduit Corp., Harvey, Ill., said it planned to increase the price of hollow structural sections (HSS) rounds and shapes by $40 per ton (AMM, March 31). Allied and other HSS manufacturers also increased prices by $50 per ton in early March (AMM, March 12).

Additionally, ArcelorMittal Shelby (Ohio), Michigan Seamless Tube LLC, South Lyon, Mich., and PTC Alliance announced 5-cent-a-pound hikes on alloy and 4-cent-per-pound hikes on...
