A stake at Peru’s Volcan Compañía Minera could be acquired in the future by a foreign enterprise now that the shares that former president and main shareholder Roberto Letts Colmenares owned in the miner were transferred to relatives following his recent death
“Rumors of a possible acquisition by a company such as Glencore or Trafigura have been all over the market,” a Peruvian metals and mining analyst told MB.
“Glencore and Trafigura already own shares in Volcan, so they are natural potential buyers, but I would also mention [Brazil’s] Votorantim Metais and Xstrata in terms of possible takeovers,” a second analyst pointed out.
Companies in China are also likely to be interested in Volcan, Raw Materials Group analyst Martin Jansson said at MB's Zinc Seminar this week. China is short of zinc concentrates: it imported 1.9 million tonnes in 2009, the highest level ever, the International Lead & Zinc Study Group reported earlier this year.
