An attempt by two of the three major U.S. producers of wide-flange steel beams to hold prices firm, even before a new benchmark raw material price was confirmed, underscores their determination to maintain steadiness in a market that only recently has begun to stabilize.
In rapid succession late Wednesday, Gerdau Ameristeel Corp. and Nucor-Yamato Steel Co. said they would hold the June transaction price on beams at the May level.
Gerdau Ameristeel said there will be "no change" on its published price page next month, according to reports from market sources on which the Tampa, Fla.-based producer declined to comment. Nucor-Yamato, Blytheville, Ark., said in a notice to customers that it will "be holding our current net transaction pricing on all products at the current level for June 2010."
This would mean that the f.o.b. mill price on the most popular range...
