Doe Run Perú will be closed if it does not restart its La Oroya polymetallics smelter by July 24, Peru’s mining minister Pedro Sánchez said on Monday
The company will have to present a closing plan for its mine and permanently shut its operations in that case, Sánchez said, adding that the deadline is “irrevocable” and that Doe Run Perú will be liquidated or restructured following its closure.
To resume smelting activities at La Oroya, Doe Run Perú needs to guarantee financing to complete an environmental clean-up programme at the smelter – which will cost $156 million – and secure ore concentrates supply.
