Bangka’s tin producers expect supply to tighten during monsoon season

Tin producers from the Indonesian island of Bangka expect tin supply to fall over the next two to three months as a result of heavy rain.

“It’s been raining every day here in Bangka. It’s been very difficult for the small-scale miners here to mine tin because of the monsoon season,” Johan Murod, director at Bangka Belitung Timah Sejahtera (BBTS), told Metal Bulletin. “Onshore mining is difficult because the mines will be filled with water, making the ores all wet. Offshore mining is also hard because of the rains and strong winds,” Murod said. “The small-scale miners operate simple boats with dredges, and it can be dangerous to sail in this kind of weather.” Tin production at BBTS may fall to 30% of its total capacity of 2,800-3,500 tpm because of the rains, he added. “As we...
