WTO rules against China in raw materials export case [UPDATE]

The appeals panel of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruled in favor of the United States on Monday, maintaining that China’s export restraints on nine key raw materials were not consistent with its obligations to the organisation.

The ruling was made in response to an appeal from China this summer, after the WTO ruled against China in July over its restrictions on exports of certain forms of bauxite, coke, fluorspar, magnesium, manganese, silicon carbide, silicon metal, yellow phosphorous and zinc. The Chinese government will now have to remove these charges and restrictions, which the United States, Mexico, and the European Union (EU) were claiming had unfairly restricted the flow of these key non-ferrous metals onto world markets.
