Technology helps cut coin counterfeiting

The combined efforts of Member States, the European Commission anti-fraud office, and other European institutions have contributed to the 15% drop in the number of counterfeit euro coins in circulation in the European Union (EU) last year; down to 157,000 coins compared to the 186,000 in 2010.

While the metallic compositions used in counterfeit coins are becoming more advanced and harder to detect as fakes, according to the European Central Bank (ECB).   Most Euro coins incorporate high-security, machine-readable characteristics which include sophisticated bi-metal and sandwich technology, such as in the copper-nickel €1 and €2 coins.
