US railroads to invest $13B on freight networks

Major U.S. railroads expect to spend a record $13 billion this year to expand and improve the nation’s freight rail networks, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

Railroads have devoted about 17 percent of their annual revenue to capital expenditures in recent years, he said, including investments in intermodal terminals; new track, bridges and tunnels; modernized safety equipment; and new locomotives, rail cars and other components.
