Ferro-chrome producers in South Africa are becoming increasingly convinced of the viability of a proposed export tax on chrome ore, with large producers engaging in renewed talks with the government intended to produce a working model.
The large integrated producers with chrome assets in the country have been lobbying the government on the issue for a while now. Notably, Xstrata is emerging as one of the strongest supporters of such a tax.
The country’s ruling African National Congress party scheduled discussion of an export tax at the five-day meeting of its National Executive Committee that started on February 2, Metal Bulletin understands.
