STEEL TUBE & PIPE CONF: Welded Tube to build energy pipe mill by '13

Welded Tube of Canada Ltd. plans to build a high-speed, state-of-the-art welded pipe mill serving the energy market.

The mill, which will have an annual capacity of 300,000 to 400,000 tons per year, will be built in either the northeastern United States or Canada.

Negotiations on a location are still under way, Mandel said.

Welded Tube of Canada, which also has a mill in Huger, S.C., expects its annual capacity to reach 750,000 tons per year by 2014—400,000 tons for the energy sector, 250,000 tons of hollow structural sections, 50,000 tons of sprinkler and A53 pipe, and 50,000 tons of mechanical pipe, Mandel said at AMM’s fifth annual Steel Tube and Pipe Conference in Houston.

The drivers behind the decision were obvious, among them "vast shale plays," the need to exploit domestic energy sources, job creation...
