Rusal to build prototype facility for red mud recycling

United Co Rusal will build a prototype facility for the recycling of alumina production waste – otherwise known as red mud – at its Urals aluminium smelter (UAZ) in Russia’s Sverdlovsk region, it said on Thursday February 9.

The facility, planned for launch in October 2014, is expected to treat up to 200,000 tpy of red mud. It will cost Rusal 600 million roubles ($20.1 million), which the company expects to recoup over a 3-year payback period. The technology, developed alongside scientists from...
