Brussels launches second legal action over Sardinian subsidies

The European Commission has launched a second European Court of Justice (ECJ) case in six months demanding the repayment of what it regards as illegal subsidies paid to metal companies in Sardinia, Italy.
Last September, Brussels started an ECJ case seeking the repayment of €25 million ($33.2 million) in what it claims were illegal fuel oil subsidies paid to the Russian-controlled company, Eurallumina SpA, which operates the Mediterranean island’s Portoscuso aluminium plant.
Now the EC has launched another case demanding Eurallumina, as well as zinc and lead producer Portovesme and processed aluminium product manufacturer ILA, both also based in Sardinia, pay back...
