Land acquisition problems frustrate Bhushan Steel expansion in West Bengal

Bhushan Steel, India’s third-largest secondary steel producer, has told Metal Bulletin it has decided to shelve its proposed $4 billion, 6 million tpy steel plant in the state of West Bengal because of land acquisition troubles.
“We have not made any headway on land acquisition so we decided, for the time being, to put it on hold,” finance director Nittin Johari said.
Many other companies have encountered similar problems, he said, adding that large projects such as Bhushan’s proposed plant cannot come to fruition unless the state government lends a hand.
