Kabanga Nickel, the Xstrata and Barrick joint venture in Tanzania, intends to start mine construction in 2013, but building infrastructure to support the mine is challenging, according to Shaun Vokes, business services manager at Kabanga.
The project is located in the remote far west of Tanzania, “as far as you can get” towards the border with Burundi, Vokes said.
“Power is a huge challenge,” Vokes told Metal Bulletin this week on the sidelines of the Mining Indaba in Cape Town.
