Mexican long steel producer Talleres y Aceros (Tyasa) has ordered a 1.2 million tpy steelmaking plant based on Siemens VAI Metals Technologies’ new Simetal EAF Quantum electric arc furnace.
Tyasa will be the first steel mill in the world to employ the new technology, which reduces the conversion cost for the electric production of steel by around 20% and decrease CO2 emissions by up to 30% per tonne of crude steel in comparison with conventional electric arc furnaces, Siemens said on Friday February 10.
The project, which also comprises the provision of secondary steelmaking facilities and a combination continuous caster, is scheduled to be completed by the middle of 2013.
