Republic Steel’s plan to build a new electric-arc furnace at its Lorain, Ohio, complex is coming closer to fruition now that a state agency has recommended the approval of an application by Republic’s energy supplier to build a new substation.
Canton, Ohio-based Republic announced in November that it planned to expand operations at Lorain by installing a new 100-megawatt EF, allowing it to roll more special bar quality product (AMM, Nov. 17). It estimated that construction on the $85.2-million project should begin this year, with the startup of the new EF projected for summer 2013.
