Trade unions plan second ArcelorMittal action day

Trade unions representing ArcelorMittal employees at its European steel mills have scheduled another action day for February 29, union representatives told Metal Bulletin on Thursday February 16.

Union organisations are to “take initiatives targeting national policy-makers to draw their attention to the risks ArcelorMittal’s strategy poses for sites, employment and, ultimately, the future of the European steel industry”, a union representative said. The day of action is an expression of many trade unions’ concerns about ArcelorMittal Europe’s financial strategy. Their fears that the Luxembourg-based steelmaker is investing large amounts of money in mining and very little in steel production are currently widespread in Europe, and were expressed at the European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) trade union coordination meeting, chaired by Bart Samyn, on February 6.
