With the market notching up another surplus in 2011 -the fifth year in succession- zinc bulls are few and far between. Although prices peaked around the $2,500 mark mid-year, much of the metal produced is finding its way into storage as part of inventory financing deals. True, the rise in mine supply is slowing, but zinc mine output is at record highs and there appears to be no sign of a fundamental shortage emerging much before 2014-2015. Certainly, with global inventory estimated at at least 2m tonnes – equivalent to 7-8 weeks’ consumption – the market will be looking to consumption patterns as a key to industry strength in the coming months. Metal suppliers will be seeking out sales opportunities in the physical market where strong premiums continue to be achieved, but with economic concerns in Europe threatening to spill into the global economy, the race will be on to secure orders for 2012 and beyond.
