Introduction

The Chinese stainless steel market undergoes some fundamental changes at the moment. Whilst the first 15 years of the Chinese Stainless Revolution (1992 - 2007) were dominated by the 'Workbench of the World' concept under which the Chinese manufacturing industry took over the production of simple commodity products from the rest of the world, the focus is shifting now. Chinese manufacturers are successfully penetrating value add stainless steel product segments including chemical process equipment (e.g. heat exchangers, tanks, fluid control systems), petrochemicals, power generation (combined cycle power plants and last generation nuclear plants), shipbuilding (incl. chemical tankers), automotive components, high speed railway systems and many more. Critical equipment no longer has to be imported, but is increasingly manufactured domestically.

This provides new opportunities and challenges to stainless steel mills in China and also their competitors abroad who have to adjust their 'China Strategy'. The volume growth of the Chinese market, especially in commodity products has slowed, resulting in unsatisfactory capacity utilization rates and production cuts of the leading producers. On the other hand the rapidly growing  need for value add stainless steel products (grades like duplex and product forms like 2 m wide coils) opens a window of opportunity. China is no longer the place where all excess capacity of the world can be dumped, but the biggest high-tech stainless steel market in making.

The conference will address this change and our top industry speakers will highlight their expectations for the future relationship between imported and domestically produced stainless steel products. Where will overseas suppliers still dominate and what will be taken over by the Chinese mills in the next 15 years? What stainless components 'Made in China' will become serious competitors to the current market leaders in Europe, North America and other Asian nations including Japan and South Korea? Where are 'Industry Clusters' developing in China?
