Turkish buyers have snapped up billet offered by Kardemir, forcing the company to close its tender for tonnage produced this month, market participants told MB.

Workers at the beleaguered Teesside Cast Products (TCP) steelworks have reason to be hopeful. Last week, Corus, the plant’s owner, said it had signed a MoU to sell the north-of-England facility to Thailand’s Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI). A sales agreement is yet to emerge, but this is encouraging. Corus should be congratulated for the progress it has made and for the effort it has expended in finding a solution for the site — it has been a very difficult process. The political interests that have infiltrated the talks surrounding TCP should not.
