Indonesian stainless mill battles smuggled imports

Smuggled imports of stainless cold rolled sheet, accounting for up to 30% of national consumption, are damaging operations at Indonesia’s leading stainless roller.

“We hope that the government will do something to eliminate all this smuggling,” said a source at PT Maspion Stainless. “It is creating chaos in the market.” He blamed local Indonesian importers for the influx of material, which is mainly Taiwanese and European in origin. “It’s nothing to do with the original suppliers of the material: the Taiwanese and the European mills,” he explained. “It’s to do with some of the local importers: the stockists, the coil centres.” Officially, Indonesia consumes 55,000-60,000 tpy of stainless CR sheet, said the Maspion source.
