(AMM) N.Y. to legalize aluminum bottles

A bill amending an almost 30-year-old bottle bill to legalize the sale of aluminum bottles in New York is unlikely to meet resistance from Gov. Andrew Cuomo, AMM understands.

"The expectation is that (Cuomo) will (sign the bill). The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is aware of the issue, and there has been no opposition to this legislation," said Erdman, who is also director of the Senate Committee on Environmental Conservation.

Though beverage manufacturers like Coca Cola Co., Anheuser-Busch InBev SA and MillerCoors LLC have introduced aluminum bottles in New York, a provision of the original 1982 bottle bill makes metal bottles technically illegal in the state for both statutory and regulatory reasons.
