GAM in talks to buy Cabot tantalum unit

Global Advanced Metals is in negotiations to acquire Cabot Corporation’s tantalum processing business, market sources told MB.

GAM, formerly known as Talison Tantalum, owns the Wodgina mine and Greenbushes processing plant in Western Australia and is the world’s leading tantalum producer. Cabot’s tantalum business is part of its Cabot Supermetals unit and is one of the world’s main consumers of the minor metal. Tantalite and tantalum metal prices have soared in the past 18 months amid an escalating supply shortage sparked by a recovery in electronics demand and new US rules around the trade of material from conflict zones in central Africa.
