Heavy rain disrupts operations at Brazil's major iron ore miners

Brazilian iron ore producers CSN, Samarco, MMX and Mineração Usiminas have been affected by heavy rains in the country’s south-eastern Minas Gerais state.

CSN told Metal Bulletin that it is “studying the possibility” of declaring force majeure on its iron ore shipments, following Vale’s previous decision.  It did not disclose further details, however. Samarco, the world’s second largest iron ore pellet exporter, said it has registered impacts in iron ore production at its Germano unit in Mariana city, Minas Gerais. “The company has been monitoring the situation but, to date, it does not register significant reduction in the pellet shipments planned until the end of January 2012,” it said.
