Rio Tinto Alcan declares force majeure in Asia-Pacific after Sohar Aluminium problems

Rio Tinto Alcan has declared force majeure on its P1020 aluminium customers in the Asia-Pacific region after operational problems at the Sohar Aluminium smelter in Oman, in a move that could push premiums to new record highs.

Sohar has a capacity of 360,000 tpy and produces aluminium ingots and sows for the international market, as well as liquid metal for the domestic Omani market. Rio manages all metal that is sold into international markets.
