State to own minimum of 25% of new Zambian mining projects – mines minister

Zambia will leverage land and mineral ownership to negotiate a shareholding of not less than 25% in new mining projects, but has no intention of nationalising the sector, Yamfwa Mukanga, Zambia’s mines minister, told Metal Bulletin.

The government hopes to see its shareholding in future mining projects rising to 35%, but its role in the mining sector will be limited to being a minority shareholder and regulating the mining environment, Mukanga said.
