Four months after the world’s first mine-to-battery cobalt operation was effectively created, the agreements have been signed, the refinery and sales offices have been renamed and Freeport’s marketing team has been revealed.

All change
Until last year, Freeport McMoRan had focused much of its attention on the mining of copper and gold.
With a controlling stake in the Tenke Fungurume copper mine in the DRC, Freeport produced cobalt hydroxide as a by-product, selling it mostly to chemical producers in China.
Dynamics in the market changed dramatically in January of this year, when Freeport and its joint venture partners at Tenke announced steps to move downstream.
