CIS pig iron offer prices move up $5 in quiet market

Offer prices for CIS-origin pig iron have pushed up by $5 per tonne as European mills start returning from summer holidays, but the outlook remains mixed, traders told Metal Bulletin sister title Steel First on Thursday August 29.

Steel First assessed basic Ukraine-origin pig iron at $385-400 per tonne fob Black Sea, up by $5 per tonne on the higher end from the previous week. Ukraine-origin basic material was heard offered at $425 per tonne cif Italy for October delivery, and at $428 per tonne cif Italy. Some Italian mills have returned from holidays, but firm pig iron enquiries have not been made yet because of weak steel production schedules for September, a trader told Steel First. “The Ukraine-origin basic pig iron offer prices in Italy seem very high, I don’t know who would buy at that level,” another trader said.
