2013 REVIEW: Weak steel demand drags down Turkish scrap imports

The Turkish scrap market was hit by weak demand in its export markets for finished steel, increasing Chinese production and anti-dumping cases in 2013.


Weak demand in Turkey’s export markets caused a reduction in finished steel output, which consequently lowered scrap imports. Demand for steel in Turkey's export markets was curtailed by anti-dumping cases against Turkish exports and political instability across the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region.
Turkish crude steel production fell by 2% year-on-year to 35.1 million tonnes, although it was expected to increase by 9% year-on-year, according to the Turkish Iron & Steel Producers Assn (TCUD).
