Vital Materials’ George Zhu started by looking for a better margin. Now he is operating a $300 million minor metals plant, reports Alex Harrison

Anhui-born George Zhu believes his 1968 birth date gave him a once-in-a-millennium opportunity to build a company that spans China and the rest of the world. An average of 30 million people were born annually in China between the years 1962 and 1972 though, and only one of them runs what some argue is the most significant company in the global minor metals market.
He spoke to Metal Bulletin Magazine as Vital Materials, the company which he founded and still holds a majority stake in, was ramping up production at its $300 million advanced materials facility on a 52-hectare site outside Guangzhou in southern China. How did Zhu, born in the Chinese year of the monkey, put himself in that position? And what does the future hold for the company, which he started to build in the evenings and weekends while working for another firm?
