Japanese aluminium premiums stay firm in stable market

Aluminium premiums in Japan were firm this week with sellers describing a global rise in premiums and consumers resisting purchases with London Metal Exchange aluminium prices near $2,000 per tonne.

Market participants indicated that aluminium premiums were at $400-408 per tonne cif Japan this week, unchanged from a week ago.
"The current LME aluminium price is above what customers will pay,” a consumer in Japan said. "A tender for 200-500 tonnes of good western material at $400 per tonne closed this month but I haven’t heard of any more deals.”
