Mawson West places DRC copper mine on care and maintenance

Toronto-listed copper miner Mawson West has put its Dikulushi copper mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on care and maintenance, citing lower-than-expected production rates.

The board decided, in consultation with its lenders, Galena Asset Management, to shut down Dikulushi after it produced “well below original expectations” in 2014, the company said on Tuesday January 20.
The mine produced about 3,000 tonnes of copper concentrate last year in Katanga province due to lower-than-expected mined ore grades.
