Rusal will not restart mothballed capacity

UC Rusal does not plan to restart “any mothballed aluminium capacity, regardless of the LME price”, as ramifications of the 2009 financial crisis and the ensuing overcapacity remain fresh on its mind.

“Optimisation of production capacity is a longterm way of ensuring the industry does not face another overproduction crisis, and the Company is committed to maintaining stable aluminium output albeit with marginal increases following the commencement of operations at the Boguchansky smelter,” Rusal’s ceo Vladislav Soloviev said in a statement on Wednesday February 25.
