MB DRI & PELLET: Africa a 'next frontier' for DRI production

African economies could make use of direct reduced iron (DRI) production to further their steel processing capabilities, conference panellists in Abu Dhabi said on Tuesday March 3.


North African countries were the obvious adopters of the process, Fabio Muscolini, proposal engineer at technology provider Danieli/Energiron, told delegates at Metal Bulletin’s 3rd World DRI and Pellet Congress.
Egypt and Libya already produce the metallic, while Qatar Steel has announced plans to set up a DRI plant in Algeria at its joint-venture steel project with state-owned entities.
But countries such as Nigeria also have DRI potential, Muscolini added.
