Protectionist measures to safeguard markets against a flood of cheap Chinese aluminium exports should be continued, including in India, according to the ceo of Vedanta Resources.

Joining the call by other aluminium producers and industry associations for China to stop producing and exporting the metal, Tom Albanese said Vedanta needs to safeguard the Indian domestic aluminium sector with a uniform import duty on primary aluminium and scrap. “This is why we are supporting the Indian Aluminium Assn’s calls to increase import duties on aluminium coming into India,” he told Metal Bulletin in an interview. “Other aluminium producers in India and around the world are facing the same challenges that we are as cheap Chinese exports flood the market.
