Alcoa will idle Suralco alumina refinery on bauxite supply, market challenges

Alcoa will wind down operations at its Suralco refinery by November 30 due to pressures from restricted bauxite supply, while alumina is trading at five year lows.

The move will take almost 900,000 tonnes of alumina refining capacity out of the market.
“Suralco’s ongoing energy challenges and limited bauxite supply, combined with unfavourable market conditions, mean it is no longer possible to continue operations,” Bob Wilt, President of Alcoa Global Primary Products, said in a statement on September 14.
