EC grants state aid clearance for energy-intensive industries in UK

The UK has secured European Commission approval to grant state compensation for the cost of renewables to energy-intensive industries (EIIs), including the UK steel industry, it said on Thursday December 17.

The approval will provide relief for the most electricity-intensive businesses for the costs of renewables policy in their bills, as pledged by UK prime minister David Cameron at the end of October.
The government will publish further guidance in January 2016, and payments from the energy-intensive industries (EIIs) compensation scheme to companies in the UK steel industry will be backdated to the date that state aid clearance comes through, the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills said on Thursday.
