ASIAN FERRO-ALLOYS CONF: Indonesia unlikely to lift ore export ban, says CIRA

Indonesia is unlikely to revoke its ban on ore exports, David Wilson, Director of Metals Research and Strategy in Citi Investment Research and Analysis (CIRA) told delegates at the Asian Ferro-alloys conference this week.

"Lifting ore export ban will [bring] limited benefits to Indonesia from both the political side and economic side," Wilson said.

The Indonesian Government has decided to review its 2009 mining law, which banned exportation of unprocessed minerals including nickel and bauxite from January 2014. The review has been prompted as collapses in key base metal/ore prices (principally nickel and bauxite/alumina) forced many projects to be postponed.
