Taiwan’s scrap import prices plunge $40 as buyers retreat

Import prices for containerised HMS-grade scrap in Taiwan have collapsed over the past week as local buyers stepped back while US suppliers kept trying to clinch deals in the East Asian island.

Steel First’s import price assessment for USA-origin HMS 1&2 (80:20) was $230-245 per tonne cfr Taiwan for the week ended Friday May 13, down by $40 from the previous $270-285 per tonne range.
Taiwanese electric arc furnace (EAF) mills started to adopt a wait-and-see position early in the week, after cuts implemented by Feng Hsin Steel to its domestic scrap purchase prices.
