China Hongqiao continues aluminium, alumina production following environmental investigations

Large aluminium producer China Hongqiao Group Ltd has not halted production nor has it paid any fines in relation to penalty notices issued to it by the county environmental regulator in Shandong province, it told Metal Bulletin.

“To date, there has been no halt to production or any fines,” a spokeswoman for the company told Metal Bulletin. Industries in China, particularly in Shandong province, have been facing a central government crackdown on pollution. Beijing has been pushing heavy industries across the country to clean up and curb carbon emissions. China Hongqiao Group, which has a 5.9 million tpy aluminium capacity, has been ordered by the local environment authority to cease production at several aluminium and alumina plants over the past five months. The company has been asked to close down a combined total capacity of 3.61 million tpy of aluminium, according to various filings between May and September 2016 on Zouping County’s government website.
