ALUMINA INDEX: New year smelter demand boosts benchmark prices again

Sellers of Australian alumina continued to offer aggressively over the past week, but met cautious buying interest ahead of the year- and quarter-ends.

Metal Bulletin’s benchmark fob Australia alumina index rose to $338.47 per tonne on Thursday December 8, an increase of $5.40 from the previous week’s calculation.
A tender of Indian alumina was believed to have been sold to a Chinese buyer at $340 per tonne fob, while carrying a slight freight advantage to Australian material.
