Public infrastructure projects will need 3m tonnes of steel by 2020, UK govt says

Publicly-funded infrastructure projects will require 3 million tonnes of steel over the next three years, the UK government said on Tuesday December 13.

Projects include a revamp of the country’s motorway system, the HS2 high-speed rail link project and the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant.
The data was revealed in a modification of the UK government's procurement strategy, meaning it will now publish its indicative future steel requirements online on an annual basis.
Information about steel requirements will freely be available and will allow steel companies to see which steel products the government requires for infrastructure projects.
The government said that the modifications were aimed at “levelling the playing field” for UK companies.
